Name: Salieri Alexandre (or Salieri, Son of Nero, if you're a Shadow)
Age: 19
Gender: Male
World History:
Salieri's world bares a similar timeline to our own, at least superficially, but with some key differences. One is the existence of magic. It's known to exist to the general populace, but those who aren't involved in it often regard it with trepidation and fear. You have to be born with a certain something that lets you cast it at all, even though you still have to go through rigorous studying and training in order to use it. Those who practice tend to gather in guilds in major cities across the globe, in order to teach one another and share their knowledge and supplies. Magic used to be left alone by society at large, and spell casters could do what they wanted in the privacy of guilds. It was a social rule among casters that you don’t go around being flagrant, but it did happen. Big changes would come a few decades later, but for now, magic and guilds are quietly thriving. The current time and place for the story is California in 1901.
Along with this comes the existence of magical creatures. This doesn't mean they're parading down the streets or penned up in zoos. Most are brought in as summoned creatures, using spells, from what is assumed to be neighboring dimensions. They often only stay for a few hours or days before disappearing home, though there has been some success in keeping them on our side of the universe. One of those is an intelligent life form that learned to take on the form of humans. Simply known as Shadows, they number in the thousands on Earth. There is much debate on how or when the cosmic door was opened for these creatures. But they've been on Earth for several centuries, generally living just outside of human society together. Their normal form is that of a wispy, shadowy form that looks vaguely human shaped, but they can take on a human form for a time of several hours to several days, depending on their strength. They can also disappear into shadows and darkness, existing in a sort of in-between region of reality, where they hide and sleep, regaining their energy.
Shadows also have the ability to hypnotize humans into doing whatever they want, often making them perform tasks they couldn't accomplish in human society. A Shadow will sometimes take a human and so distort their mind that they become their slaves, the result of which are called dolls. Dolls tend to be empty-minded slaves, completely lost of their identity and memories, who only function by commands of their masters. Getting them to come back to their senses can be extremely difficult, almost impossible. Naturally, a power like this keeps most humans from ever trusting them.
Shadows have tried to become a real part of society for decades, wanting to be allowed to live among humans. But their own social hierarchy, as well as their tendency to make unwilling slaves of people, have kept them firmly out. However, most Shadows would argue they had to take humans captive in order to work for them just to function at all, and wouldn't have had to if humans had let them live among them normally. As generations go by, the more taking on dolls is looked down upon by other Shadows, and the process starting to die out. It's still something practiced by Shadow nobility, however. There is a royal hierarchy among the Shadows, with a King and Queen in charge, and Barons/Baronesses in charge of territories around the world. Humans are almost completely ignorant to this side of their society, too afraid to interact with them.
If you asked a Shadow where they originally came from, and what brought them to Earth, they'll likely tell you a tale about a powerful young spellcaster the likes no one has ever seen. He was who summoned them from a plane across dimensions. The original few that were brought along lived with him, and he treated them like his own family. But as he summoned more and more Shadows, the spells became weaker and weaker, and some Shadows arrived from the other side without memories of where they came from. Eventually the spellcaster closed off his portals to their world forever, and the Shadows here now have been here for a few centuries. This story is actually quite close to the truth, and it involved a powerful summoner and some experimental magic. It's thought that there are none of the original seven brought to Earth still alive after all these centuries; there are actually still two left, though they keep their identities hidden for their own reasons.
Personal History:
Salieri is the middle of three children of a family of noble Shadows. Salieri's father, Nero, is the baron of the central California region, and he was born and raised in San Francisco and an important financier in the Shadow community. Salieri had always been the odd one out in his family, the spoiled and capricious one among his more serious-minded family members. His mother passed away when he was young, no longer there to be a calming influence on Nero. Voltaire, Salieri's older brother, can't stand his irresponsible brother, and the two aren't on good terms. His younger sister, Catherine, is the only one who looks on him with any fondness. Salieri adores her and does his best to be th overprotective older brother.
For his entire life, Salieri has never done anything he's never wanted to do, and has been rebellious at every turn. He insists on living life his own way, which happens to be with very little direction at all. Growing up, he barely paid any attention to his school lessons. Academics put him to sleep, and he would much rather have been doing literally anything else. He'd often run off from tutors and classes to be found wandering the streets and looking for anything interesting to do. It didn't matter what. Outgoing, well-spoken, and charming, Salieri ended up making a lot of acquaintances and friends around the city, unlike most Shadows. He didn't even have to use any hypnotic powers on anyone, which was for the best, since he'd never gotten very good at using that. Eventually he became one of the most well-connected Shadows around. While it hadn't been his intent at first, this obviously came with some perks, in that he could be someone others turned to for information. It earned him favors and money, and the more he earned, the more it encouraged Salieri to dig deeper into the darker corners San Francisco. This way, he ended up becoming acquainted with the criminal world, the black market, as well as the local spellcasters and shapeshifters.
Like a lot of Shadows, Salieri thought the idea of dolls as distasteful. However, his father had had one, and his brother did as well: a stunning woman called Guinevere who followed Voltaire around blankly. Voltaire treated her like a trophy to be trotted around more than as someone to do his bidding. Salieri always swore he would never do the same thing, but that changed the day he met a man who was ready to throw himself off one of San Francisco's steep cliffs, into the ocean. The young name was named Sean Moriarty, and Salieri sat with him for a long time to talk. Moriarty had a lot of problems, and his loneliness was getting the better of him. Salieri managed to convince the man to come along with him - all he had to do was pretend he was under Saleri's thrall when his family was paying attention. That way, Moriarty could stay with him, get away from all of his problems, have company and meet all sorts of new people. He would just have to act hypnotized so Shadows wouldn't get angry about his presence. From that day on, the two were inseparable. Salieri's family were surprised that Salieri would ever take a doll, and while Voltaire was suspicious at first, he eventually stopped thinking about it. If his brother was up to something, he didn't really care. Catherine eventually figured it out after spying on them, but is keeping it to herself.
Salieri got involved with spellcasters after meeting a certain one on the streets named Ed Grayson, more popularly known as Doc G. Doc G was a mage and snake oil salesman, always on the move in San Francisco and the surrounding areas. He frequent visitor of Rookwood Inn near the wharves, a popular spot for mages and non-humans in the city. Due to his connections, Salieri had found out that Grayson was wanted by the police for theft from the prominent mage guild, Lumen Concientia. However, the police weren't pursuing the years-old case too hard, as they tend to let the mage guilds deal with their own problems due to the prejudice against them. But Salieri found Grayson fascinating, and decided to not turn him in, and even help him hide when any law enforcement or LC guild member came his way. Although he saw right through Grayson's deceit and tricks, Salieri greatly admired him. He could tell Grayson only just barely tolerated his presence, but he didn't care. This man was a great source of entertainment, and if he tried to tell him to buzz off, Salieri had a lot of dirt on him to hold over his head.
Personality:
Salieri is as changing as the wind. Some find his capriciousness intriguing, others frustrating. What he wants most is to do whatever he wants, and not have anyone hold him back. He turns a cold shoulder to any authority figures and will blow past anyone who tries to get in his way. All that matters is having a good time, meeting interesting people, and finding new and exciting things to do.
Salieri has a rather short attention span. He was never much for reading books or studying, and it was very difficult to keep him interested in education. If they were human, Nero would have shipped him off to military school as soon as possible. Instead, he hired tutor after tutor to try to keep Salieri interested. The only subjects that ever appealed to him were history (and only when the stories were juicy and action-packed) and, strangely, etiquette. The latter was because it let him slide into the right social circles, even if he didn't actually enjoy strict societal norms.
He has never been able to focus on any hobbies for too long, unless you consider his constant seeking of pleasure and fun a hobby. If he had any besides that, it would be appreciation of fashion. Salieri is on top of the latest trends in both men's and women's fashions, to the point where people seek him out for advice. Despite this, his own personal style is pretty loud. He loves the color red so much, it's almost an obsession. Want to turn his opinion around on a fashion accessory, or new car, or pretty much anything? Make it red. He wears it almost exclusively. He has enough money and fashion knowledge to dress very well, and it helps get him even more of the attention he loves.
If something manages to stop Salieri from getting what he wants, he's not the kind to get angry. It's difficult, but not impossible, to make him outright angry. Instead, he will more likely pout or whine instead. The spoiled side of him comes out in full force when he doesn't get what he wants, and all of that charm and maturity goes out the window immediately. The person who sees this side of him the most is definitely his father and brother.
While not an outright bad person, Salieri isn't exactly good either. Most Shadows either distrust humans or hold them in contempt, but not him. He has many human friends who don't even know that he's not human. He's never really had an attachment to Shadow society, and lives on the fringes of the rest of the world instead. He has no interest in the pursuits of the Shadow nobility, and has no aim to become a baron himself someday. That comes with a lot of responsibility he just can't give a damn about. Still, that doesn't mean he hates being a Shadow. If anything, he's quite proud of it, since it makes him so much more special and mysterious than the average person.
When asked about his plans for the future, Salieri always just laughs it off, much to his family's frustration. He doesn't have a job and has no plans to get one anytime soon. Sometimes, deep down, it does bother Salieri that he doesn't have any goals, any desire for a career or position of power, or anything like that. But his attitude makes it hard for him to care about it for too long. Maybe someday it will change, as he grows older and matures. But, for now, he's content to chase his own bliss, meet new people and see exciting new places, and spend time with Moriarty.
